Catherine Lake – Vintage Collage

Coming to The Cat House again this year, is Catherine Lake. This year she’s taking a very different direction:

Catherine has a background in three dimensional design and has been interested in vintage finds of everyday items for a number of years.

‘I’m interested in giving life to redundant items that are throw-away or stuffed into albums, left in drawers… forgotten’.

Cigarette cards from the 1930s, advertising milk bottle tops from the ’50s, copper stencils and general interest books from the ’60s.

56 Tivoli Crescent gets a bit cheeky!

Moira is working on new prints for this years open house at 56 Tivoli Crescent. There are four new editions so far.

Someone suggested that her work was getting less risqué and rather tame. That was seen as a red rag to the bull…

Greetings from a very new artist and a very new venue

Dyke Road Arts extends a warm welcome to Nigel & Mark. The Station will be opening this year thanks to new manager Mark Plumstead. The lead artist is Nigel Summers (www.nigelsummersart.co.uk).

Nigel writes:
The reason I took up painting is because I have been inspired by visiting your houses over the past five or six years. I live in Dyke Road, and my local pub is The Station, so I asked Mark, the landlord, if he would consider opening the pub as an Open House. I know what a convenient spot it is on the trail when I have walked it these past few years.

I am a Brighton & Hove Albion fan and it seems like a very long time ago that I used to make monthly visits to a building site alongside the A27 to capture the creation of Falmer on video for a series on youtube.

Falmer became The Amex of course and the iconic stadium inspired me to think about capturing some images of the stadium in oil on canvas. And now, after selling a couple of paintings and some very kind comments from various people, I have decided to actually do something serious about it and have launched my very own website to showcase the artwork, and perhaps sell some prints too.

The link to the website is  http://www.nigeldotsummers@yahoo.co.uk/ and I hope you will take a look and let me know what you think. Thank you for your inspiration. I look forward to meeting you all soon.

The Cat House welcomes Paul…

Paul Stapleton was born in Brighton in 1975. Raised on a daily breakfast of The Perishers, Dilbert, Calvin and Hobbes and the occasional Peanuts, his fall into the murky world of comic writing was inevitable.
From a series of handmade mini-comics during the mid-nineties to a prolific slew of full-blown graphic novels since, Paul made a niche for himself by documenting the absurd, the idiotic and annoying in collections such as Facebook The Comicbook, I Must Rise Above These Divs and Defects, The Weekend Starts There and more, before going full circle and creating his own daily strip, Latchkey.
More recently, he has stepped sideways across the nerd spectrum and produced a full-fledged board game called BN1, based on his latest comic series and set in his eccentric and unique home town.
